BRA Board Approves New Plan for Jackson Square Recreational Center

The Board approved a new plan for the Jackson Square Recreational Center, which will bring a multi-season ice rink and indoor activity center to the neighborhood. The Center will be a tremendous asset to the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury communities as it will provide year-round affordable activities for youth and families. Specifically, the project includes a regulation sized ice rink that can be covered to act as a TURF field during summer hours, as well as four locker rooms, concessions, an arcade, administrative office space, and mechanicals to operate the rink.

• Total square footage: 38,500
• Construction jobs: 82 / permanent jobs: 10
• Total project cost: $16 million

Previously approved in November of 2007, the project’s revision was necessary given that the revised Jackson Commons project will be located where the recreational center was originally slated.

The development team includes Jackson Square Partners, LLC, a unique collaboration of three community-based non-profit organizations, each of which has a longstanding history in the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods: the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, Urban Edge Housing Corporation, and the Hyde Square Task Force. BHNA is the project architect.
